In an earlier post I linked to Bunnie Huang's blog, which describes (among other things) the manufacturing of his startup's hi-tech Chumby gadget in Shenzhen. At Foo Camp he and I ran a panel on the Future of China. In the audience, among others, were Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, and Guido van Rossum, the creator of Python. Jimmy was typing on his laptop the whole time, but Guido asked a bunch of questions and recommended a book to me.
Bunnie has some more posts up (including video) giving his impressions of manufacturing in China. Highly recommended!
Made in China: Scale, Skill, Dedication, Feeding the factory.
Below: Bunnie on the line, debugging what turns out to be a firmware problem with the Chumby. Look at those MIT wire boys go! :-)

The manufacturing guys at Evolving Excellence also have a long post analyzing several of Bunnie's posts. Some good insight into Chinese contract manufacturing.

Ken
Steve,
Very interesting stuff from a very perceptive individual. I wish there was stuff like that from other parts of the world as well.
Another interesting aspect of globalization in Asia is the adaptation of other countries in the region in light of China's rise in manufacturing. For example, I am told that Singapore has been quite adaptive; moving from manufacturing to now being a destination for high-end education (management), world-class health facilities. What do you think?
Thanks a lot for sharing this with us; all this is so fascinating/exciting!!
