Huh. The Chinese think the Americans are more powerful, the Americans aren't sure, and the Europeans think the Chinese are more powerful, and across the board, public perception is swinging towards the Chinese.
This is a case of the grass being greener on the other side. Those who are close to China, the Chinese, the Pakistanis, or even Japan, sees the problems of China and thinks America is more powerful. Those who are closer to the West and did not see China close and personal, think China is more powerful.
I suspect that the divide is between those nations living in the past, and those looking towards the future.
Of course, the question is whether that future is toward China or toward the U.S.: it all depends upon whether the people of the U.S. can still pull the rabbit out of the hat.

Shall we place our bets, gentlemen?
I suspect that you would have been less surprised if you'd lived in Europe, Steve.
ReplyDeleteIt might be interesting to do Pearsons between demonstrably irrational America-sucks-ism, such as this, and national ethnicity breakdown.
The Europeans are looking to China to do Business. The news from America are all about unemployement, recession, etc..
