Higgs bosons, information and black holes

Sorry for the lack of posts. I've been a bit busy with this Higgs data meeting. It's fun to have people from both CMS and ATLAS (the two detector collaborations at LHC) together in an informal setting :-)

Next week (and for two more weeks after that) I will be at KITP Santa Barbara at the Bits, Branes, Black Holes workshop.

OT. thought this might be of interest Steve.

"A small but dedicated group of undergraduates, who form the Cambridge University MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Society, are anxious to change popular perceptions and align the sport alongside judo, taekwondo and jiu-jitsu. The society's stated aim is to "combine a world-class academic education with a world-class education in mixed martial, muay Thai and Brazilian jiu-jitsu"....

He said: "There is a distorted perception of what MMA is all about but for me it is like a game of chess because you have to plan ahead, switching moves. The people who train in MMA are very intellectually attuned.

"Our trainer trains all the way and eats very well. He has a vast knowledge of techniques. He is as far away from being a thug as you could get."

Mr Barnatt said that he had been impressed by the dedication of an inner core among society members, who include a "few ladies".

Rosi Sexton, 34, the seventh ranked MMA female fighter in the world, graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge with a first in mathematics before going on to take a PhD.

Ms Sexton, who is now a registered osteopath, said: "Mixed martial arts is an intellectual challenge because there is so much to learn technically.

"I can see that it would appeal to a lot of students."
