Dyson video

The video from our December 2009 public discussion with Freeman Dyson is available here. (I think this should automatically stream if you have QuickTime, but otherwise you might end up downloading a 170MB .mov file.)

See here for earlier discussion and a link to a transcript.

  1. Thanks for posting the video - it was a wonderful talk.

I was a little perturbed by Freeman's dismissal of NERVA (or so it seemed to me).

Thanks to the rocket equation, doubling the Isp more than doubles the mass ratio. Chemical rockets are almost good enough for mankind to explore the solar system - NERVA has enough performance to actually do it.

Now compared to Project Orion NERVA ain't that great... but it has a much more straightforward path to implementation ;-)

  3. OT: Hi Steve - Sorry if I'm being a pest, but I wanted to check to make sure you received my email inviting you to join FoS. Cheers.

  4. Thank you for posting this Professor Hsu. I was unable to attend the talk and I did not know it was recorded.

After watching this I have a deep admiration for the life he has lived and the things he has done. Truly an incredible and brilliant person that can communicate his ideas with the utmost eloquence and clarity.
